KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) will field a mix of seasoned and experienced candidates, young people and women from various ethnic groups in the 16th Melaka state election on Nov 14.

PKR vice-president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the party's candidates will be individuals capable of serving the community and possessing qualities that can help secure victory in the state constituencies they contest.

“In some state constituencies where our support is relatively low, we will allow candidates to gain experience. This is part of the party’s and Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) long-term plan,” he told reporters after attending the Semarak Kasih event with Yayasan Selangor students here today.

Asked about cooperation with other parties, Amirudin, who is also PKR election director, said a decision will be made within the next one to two weeks.

PKR secretary-general Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said yesterday that the party would contest nine seats in the Melaka state election, with its list of candidates to be announced by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also PH chairman, on Oct 24.

The Election Commission has set Nov 14 as polling day for the Melaka state polls, with early voting on Nov 10 and nomination day on Oct 31.

Melaka has 28 state assembly seats, with Barisan Nasional (BN) winning 21 in the previous state election, PH securing five and Perikatan Nasional (PN) taking the remaining two.

In a separate development, Amirudin, who is also Selangor Menteri Besar, denied PKR’s involvement in the khalwat (close proximity) case involving former Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, dismissing claims of a politically motivated plot.

The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) confirmed yesterday that an arrest had been made in connection with a khalwat offence involving a political leader in the Petaling district at 6 pm on Oct 15.
