KUCHING, Oct 14 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) has foiled an attempt to smuggle 2,450 cartons of cigarettes, worth RM83,300, in the Op Keris Parang operation conducted in Serikin, a border village about 60 kilometres from here, early this morning.
According to a statement today from the First Malaysian Infantry Division (1 Div) at around 5 am, the operation team detected a vehicle moving towards an illegal Malaysia-Indonesia border crossing.
"The vehicle, with a blue canvas covering its rear cargo area, was moving suspiciously when it was intercepted on the illegal route, about 400 metres from the national border.
"The inspection found that the vehicle, driven by a local, was carrying various controlled items as well as groceries without any travel documents or valid cargo verification documents," read the statement.
The statement also said that a four-wheel drive worth RM110,000, two mobile phones worth RM1,500, and a crossbody bag worth RM50 were also seized.
The driver and all the seized items were then handed over to the Bau district police headquarters for further action.
