KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohamed Taufiq Johari is confident that the national contingent can achieve and even exceed the target set for the upcoming Asian Para Games, drawing inspiration from the positive performance of the country's athletes at the recent Asian Games.

He said the success of the national athletes at the Asian Games would serve as a catalyst for para athletes to deliver their best performance at the Games.

“For the Asian Para Games, I hope that we can also achieve the target that will be announced, and not only achieve it but also exceed it.

“I am confident that the positive elements brought by the Asian Games, and the performance of our able-bodied athletes, can serve as a source of motivation for our para athletes,” he said.

He said this during the Bernama Radio Fokus 30 programme, which was also attended by Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.

The Malaysian contingent won nine gold medals at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, matching the country's best-ever achievement at Guangzhou 2010, while exceeding the target of six gold medals set previously.

The gold medals came from karate, e-sports, sepak takraw, squash and track cycling, enabling Malaysia to surpass the target of six gold medals set before the Games.

Meanwhile, Dr Mohamed Taufiq said he also placed full confidence in the athletes, coaches, chef de mission (CDM) and the entire team to ensure that the target set could be achieved.

The Malaysian contingent to the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games is targeting six gold, 10 silver and 16 bronze medals through athletics, badminton and boccia.
