JOHOR BAHRU, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- The Johor Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued 3,072 notices for various traffic offences to 1,346 individuals during the Special Operation on Foreign Drivers (Ops PeWA), which has been carried out statewide from June 1 until today.

State JPJ director Zulkarnain Yasin said the foreigners involved included 447 Pakistani nationals, 251 Bangladeshis, 223 Singaporeans, 180 Indonesians and 150 Myanmar nationals.

“Action was also taken against 21 Vietnamese, 19 Indian nationals, five Nepalese, two Cambodians and 48 individuals from other countries,” he said at a press conference at the Johor JPJ headquarters here today.

He said investigations found that about 70 per cent of the vehicles ridden or driven by the foreigners were privately owned by them, which had been purchased second-hand without a valid transfer of ownership at the JPJ.

“They purchase the vehicles through a handover method. When they wish to return to their home countries, the vehicles are sold to other friends. This situation makes it difficult to trace the original owners,” he said.

Meanwhile, Zulkarnain said the vehicles seized comprised 347 motorcycles, 69 cars and 24 other private vehicles.

He said that overall, 10,580 vehicles were inspected, resulting in 4,565 offences being detected.

This included 788 offences for not possessing a Competent Driving Licence (CDL), the highest number of offences.

Other offences included 693 cases involving expired Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM), 528 cases of vehicles without insurance coverage, 449 cases of vehicle owners allowing their vehicles to be driven by individuals without a CDL, and 207 offences for failing to wear a crash helmet.

Zulkarnain said the department would continue to intensify integrated enforcement operations with relevant agencies to ensure compliance with road traffic laws while safeguarding the safety of road users.

“JPJ also requests the cooperation of all parties to abide by the regulations and remain tolerant of other road users for the safety of themselves and their families,” he said.
