KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- Maxis Berhad (Maxis) contributed 15 refurbished laptops to underprivileged students at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), marking the milestone of distributing more than 1,000 refurbished laptops to education and community causes over the past three years.
Under its circularity initiatives, the company serviced and reconditioned retired enterprise laptops before donating them to community partners and students, providing undergraduates with dependable access to coursework and online academic resources.
Maxis Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Azizul Abdul Rahman said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to digital inclusion and responsible technology use, guided by its brand promise, "Tomorrow Begins Today".
“Reaching this milestone of 1,000 refurbished laptops demonstrates how circularity can create meaningful community impact. With this latest handover, we hope the devices will ease daily learning challenges for UKM students as they work towards their academic goals,” he said in a statement today.
Meanwhile, UKM Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Sufian Jusoh said access to digital tools and learning resources is essential for students to achieve academic excellence.
“We welcome this practical support, which helps ease financial pressures on our students. Active collaboration between universities and corporate partners plays an important role in closing the digital divide, and ongoing industry support is vital to preparing future-ready talent,” he said, as quoted in the same statement.
Beyond tertiary education, Maxis also contributed refurbished laptops to schools and community centres nationwide, where devices were provided to secondary school students under the Menuju Gemilang programme.
The initiative was developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Education to assist underprivileged students preparing for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination while equipping them for tertiary education.
The laptop contributions also complement Maxis’s GenAI eKelas programme, as part of its ongoing efforts to improve digital access across Malaysia.
“Extending the useful life of these devices promotes circularity and delays e-waste. Giving these assets a productive second life supports digital inclusion across Malaysia by providing essential tools to students and communities,” the company said.
