KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 (Bernama) -- KL Wellness City will host the RunFest Grand Prix Race 2027 from March 26 to 28, featuring a new 5km Soloist category alongside the returning SEKIDEN team relay.
The three-day event was officially launched at the KL Wellness City Gallery in Bukit Jalil today, with Unikorn Events Sdn Bhd managing director Niklas Yong saying the new category followed strong demand for individual competition at the inaugural KL RunFest in 2025.
“Based on our experience in 2025 at KL RunFest in Bukit Jalil, there was very high demand for a solo individual category, which we are introducing in the 2027 edition.
“Unlike most 5km races, which are mainly fun runs, ours is a highly competitive event in which runners progress to the semi-finals and finals based on their fastest lap times rather than their overall finishing time,” he told Bernama after the launch.
Niklas said the 60 runners with the fastest lap times would advance to the semi-finals, with the top 30 progressing to the finals.
The SEKIDEN relay will feature three-person teams, with the qualifying round covering 12km and the final 6km; about 500 teams are expected, and the 30 teams recording the fastest overall qualifying times will advance to the final.
Meanwhile, KL Wellness City Executive Director of Branding, Sales and Marketing Datuk Seri Dr Vincent Tiew said hosting the event was in line with the city’s vision to promote health, wellness and active living in the community.
“The return of the SEKIDEN team relay brings a strong element of teamwork and community, while the new 5km Soloist category gives people the opportunity to challenge themselves and participate at their own pace and level,” he said.
Vincent said the event would give participants, families and friends an opportunity to connect through the three-day programme, which will include a RunFest Village featuring food, games and activities.
The Soloist category will comprise men’s and women’s Open divisions for runners aged 18 to 39, and men’s and women’s Veteran divisions for those aged 40 and above.
Registration for the event, which will offer a total prize purse of RM13,500, opens on Oct 7, with participants encouraged to follow RunFest’s official channels and Unikorn Events Sdn Bhd for registration details and further updates.
