SIBU, Sept 19 (Bernama) -- The proposed Sibu Economic Zone (SEZ), backed by an initial RM1.5 billion allocation, is poised to become a key driver in coordinating the town's economic transformation and attracting fresh investment.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the state government had agreed in principle to set up the SEZ, focusing on investment, the services sector and high-value job creation.

He added that Sibu's development would be further bolstered by stronger connectivity and industrial capacity, including the proposed West Bank Bridge and the Sibu Industrial Park, slated for completion in 2029.

“The proposed Bukit Assek redevelopment, which has received in-principle approval, is another important long-term initiative aimed at moving Sibu towards a more sustainable and higher-value economic direction,” he said.

Dr Sim said this while delivering his speech at the 2026 Annual General Meeting of the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sarawak (ACCCIS) here today.

He said Sarawak was entering an important phase of economic transformation that requires it to move beyond traditional industries and develop new sectors as well as knowledge and technical capabilities.

Among the areas identified for future growth are renewable and green energy, semiconductors, healthcare, digitalisation and technology-related industries.

Dr Sim also called on the private sector to play a greater role in translating government policies, infrastructure and development platforms into actual investments, business activities and employment opportunities.

He said the government would continue providing policy direction, infrastructure and platforms for growth, while businesses should be prepared to invest, innovate and seize new opportunities.
