WASHINGTON, Sept 16 (Bernama-dpa) - The Kennedy Centre in Washington will be closed, US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, citing financial issues and renovations, reported German news agency dpa.

The move came hours after a federal judge blocked the institution from returning Trump's name to the building.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the closure was needed for renovations.

However, the renovation work would only happen if the board was allowed to add his name to the building, he said.

"If the ruling is a negative one, which it should not be, and is not overturned by the US Supreme Court, the Reconstruction and the Renovation of The Kennedy Centre will not take place."

The US administration has repeatedly noted that the Kennedy Centre complex, located on the Potomac River, is in need of repairs and modernization.

The Kennedy Centre hosts performances across theatre, dance and music and was named after former president John F Kennedy (1917-1963).

Trump's name was added in December, sparking protests and cancellations by several performers and groups.

Shortly after taking office, Trump dismissed several members of the centre's board and took over its leadership.
