ISKANDAR PUTERI, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) could only manage a 1-1 draw against Buriram United of Thailand in their 2026/2027 AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE) East Zone opening match at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium tonight.
The home team managed to secure the lead through Oscar Arribas in the 26th minute, scoring from inside the penalty box of a pass from Marcos Guilherme.
Buriram United were stung and started playing aggressively, coming close to equalising in the 38th minute, but Guilherme Bissoli Campos’ shot was deflected by JDT goalkeeper Ahmad Syihan Hazmi.
They finally secured their equaliser in the 43rd minute, when Stefan Schimmer scored after receiving the ball from Darlan Pereira Mendes.
JDT were unable to secure another goal in the second half even though Buriram United had to play with ten men when team captain Ken Dougall picked up a red card for a foul on Nacho Mendez in the 57th minute.
JDT themselves had a man sent off in the 90th minute after Eddy Silvestre Israfilov fouled Alexandru Tudorie.
While both teams had several opportunities at goal, JDT’s penalty attempt by Bergson Da Silva that was blocked by Buriram United goalkeeper Etheridge in the 87th minute was the closest either team got to scoring.
