KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- High Commissioner-designate of India to Malaysia Somnath Ghosh arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday to begin his tenure.

The High Commission of India in Malaysia said Ghosh was received by Deputy High Commissioner Hitesh Rajpal and a representative from Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry upon his arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

“HC (High Commissioner)-designate assumed charge today at @hcikl and met the officers and staff.

“We look forward to working under his leadership and guidance to further strengthen the India–Malaysia partnership,” the High Commission posted on the X platform on Thursday.

He succeeds B.N. Reddy, who completed his tenure of almost five years in May.

Prior to this appointment, Ghosh was the Consul General at the Consulate General of India in Chicago.

Ghosh joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 1997 and has held various key positions, including Ambassador to Mongolia between 2014 and 2016, followed by an ambassadorial stint in Tajikistan.

He holds an M.Sc degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur and speaks Bengali, Hindi, English and Russian, according to an official profile.

Ghosh handled international cooperation work in the Defence Ministry from September 2019 to September 2022 and in that capacity oversaw defence policy and negotiations with the United States, Russia, France, Britain, and countries in India's neighbourhood.

India is one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world, with a strong services sector and rising domestic consumption.
