WASHINGTON, Sept 2 (Bernama-dpa) -- Apple has changed the name of Lake Ontario to "Lake America" on its Maps app for users in the United States, following a similar move by Google after President Donald Trump ordered the lake to be renamed, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

US users searching for Lake Ontario on Apple Maps are still directed to the lake on the US-Canada border, but it is now labelled "Lake America". The change follows Trump's controversial decision to rename the lake amid a trade dispute with Canada.

The new name is displayed only to Apple users in the US, while users in Canada continue to see Lake Ontario, Canadian broadcaster CBC reported.

Google made a similar change to its Maps service several days earlier.

Lake Ontario is one of North America's five Great Lakes, four of which straddle the US-Canada border.

Trump has increasingly used geographical renamings during his second term as a symbolic show of power. In this case, the move reflects his frustration with Canada over its refusal to give ground in the trade dispute with the US.

Last year, Google and Apple also adopted Trump's renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America" for users in the US. The body of water had been widely known as the Gulf of Mexico since the 16th century.
