KLUANG, Aug 24 (Bernama) – The Department of Labour Peninsular Malaysia (JTKSM) wants education on safety in the workplace to be implemented as early as school to build student awareness before entering the world of work.
JTKSM director-general Kamal Pardi said early exposure was important so that students would not only understand the safety aspects of a premises, but would also be able to put it into practice when entering the world of work later.
He said the approach was also implemented through the JTKSM MADANI School Adoption Programme which did not just focus on improving physical facilities, but rather gave priority to the safety and well-being of the school community.
"At SMK Layang-Layang, several facilities have been upgraded, including the construction of an 'awning' or additional roof between the open hall and the school canteen, which is equipped with water channels to reduce the risk of students being exposed to rain.
"The side of the open hall has also been installed with an 'awning' to provide comfort during assemblies or school programmes, in addition to the construction of drain covers in risky locations and the rendering of the floor so that the level is safer," he told reporters after the MADANI Adoption School Programme at SMK Layang-Layang here today.
Kamal said each improvement was also used as an educational medium for students with JTKSM and the education department would provide explanations on the importance of safety aspects on the premises and the risks that could occur if preventive measures were ignored.
He said through the programme, SMK Layang-Layang received an allocation of RM100,000 from JTKSM, while Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp) contributed RM40,000 to implement student development programmes and the construction of the school stage.
