DHAKA, Aug 21 (Bernama-BSS) -- Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has taken the oath as the 23rd President of Bangladesh on Friday, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) reported.
The oath-taking ceremony was held at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban at 7.30 pm (local time).
Acting Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal administered the oath.
Upon his arrival at Bangabhaban, the president-elect was welcomed by senior officials before being received by Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the chief justice, members of the Cabinet, foreign diplomats, members of parliament and senior civil and military officials attended the ceremony.
Following the oath-taking, the President and the outgoing acting president exchanged seats, symbolising the formal transfer of office.
Mirza Fakhrul then signed the oath of office and oath of secrecy before the ceremony concluded with the national anthem.
Members of parliament elected Fakhrul, one of the country's most senior political leaders and a former secretary-general of the BNP, as the country's 23rd President in accordance with the Constitution of Bangladesh.
