KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- A group of 16 Malaysian tourists who were in areas affected by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake on Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, have been confirmed safe and in good health.
In a media advisory on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry said the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta had successfully established contact with the group following the earthquake, which struck northeast of Mbay in Nagekeo Regency at 4.58 am local time.
“At this stage, the ministry can confirm that there have been no reports of Malaysians affected by this incident.
“Furthermore, the Embassy has successfully established contact with a group of 16 Malaysian tourists known to be in the vicinity, all of whom have been confirmed to be safe and in good health,” the advisory said.
The ministry said the embassy is actively coordinating with the relevant local authorities to ascertain the safety and well-being of Malaysians in the affected areas.
It advised Malaysians residing in or travelling to the affected regions to remain vigilant, prioritise their personal safety and strictly adhere to safety instructions issued by local authorities.
“The ministry will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates should there be any new developments concerning Malaysian citizens,” the advisory read.
Malaysians were also urged to register and regularly update their contact details through the e-Konsular portal to facilitate timely communication and consular assistance.
