KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- The future of DAP’s position in the federal government will come into focus tomorrow when the 2026 DAP Party Conference gets underway at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC).
DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke will table a motion to determine whether the party will remain in, or withdraw from, the Unity Government until the end of the current parliamentary term.
A total of 4,264 delegates from 1,704 eligible branches will shoulder the major responsibility of determining the party’s direction through a secret ballot after the debate session concludes.
To ensure transparency and reflect the party’s democratic maturity, DAP is departing from its customary method of voting by voice or a show of hands.
The voting process, which is expected to take about two hours, will not only determine whether the party remains in government, but will also serve as an indicator of DAP’s readiness to chart its course ahead of the next general election.
Ahead of the conference, DAP leaders at the state level have expressed their views, with Johor DAP chairman Teo Nie Ching and DAP Central Executive Committee member and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow each taking an open approach without adopting any official position.
Yesterday, both leaders gave their state delegates complete freedom to make their own decisions based on their individual considerations at tomorrow’s conference.
In contrast, Perak DAP unanimously decided last Wednesday to remain in the Unity Government to fulfil the people’s mandate and continue the country’s reform agenda.
This year’s conference is also being held in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of DAP’s establishment.
The conference is scheduled to begin at 10 am, with a welcoming address by DAP national chairman Gobind Singh Deo, followed by a policy speech and the presentation of the Central Executive Committee report by Loke.
DAP is one of the three component parties in Pakatan Harapan, alongside PKR and Amanah.
