ROME, Aug 14 (Bernama-dpa) -- Operations at Catania airport on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sicily have again been suspended due to the latest eruption of Mount Etna during the peak holiday season, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
There will be no arrivals or departures until 2 am (0000 GMT) on Saturday, the airport said late on Thursday. Travellers were advised not to go to the airport without first checking the status of their flight with the relevant airline.
On Thursday, airport operator SAC had extended a ban on arrivals until 8 am on Friday. Operations depend on the volcano's activity as well as wind direction and the concentration of ash in the air.
Hundreds of flights have been cancelled, delayed or diverted since the eruption began a week ago.
SAC said the impact on the airport's infrastructure was the most severe in 20 years.
