KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- Social media activist group, Sekretariat Gerak Gempur Media Sosial Rakyat Malaysia (SEKPUR), is urging the government to take appropriate action against those involved in mismanagement at Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH).

The call was made during a peaceful gathering and the submission of a memorandum on the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on TH at the main entrance to Parliament today.

SEKPUR secretary Mohd Yani Alias said the memorandum was handed over to the press secretary to the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Zairudin Hashim, at 12.35 pm to be forwarded to Minister Senator Dr Zulkifli Hasan.

“We are submitting this memorandum to urge the government and authorities to take action following the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree that those responsible for the issues involving TH must be brought to justice and pursued to the fullest extent.

“If there has been any wrongdoing or mismanagement, we do not care who is responsible or which party they belong to. They must be brought to justice and face stern action because TH belongs to the Muslim and Malay community,” he said.

SEKPUR also raised concerns over TH’s long-term financial stability and the need to provide competitive hibah distributions to depositors.

The memorandum also touched on the rising cost of performing the haj, which it claimed was placing an increasing burden on the people, and called for greater transparency in the management of haj quotas.

The memorandum was submitted following today’s special Dewan Rakyat sitting to hear the minister’s briefing on the RCI report on TH and efforts to restore the institution’s financial position.

The 211-page RCI report was made public on July 29, containing various findings on weaknesses in the institution’s management and operations between 2014 and 2020.

The report also made 25 recommendations for improvements, with 75 per cent of them implemented by TH as of July 30.
