MELAKA, Aug 10 (Bernama) -- Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) views the Melaka state election as a “new platform” to rebuild its strength through a more mature political approach centred on ideas and policies that are clearly communicated to the people.
Acting Chairman of the Melaka PKR Leadership Council Adam Adli Abd Halim acknowledged that the party faces a major challenge in rebuilding public confidence after failing to win any state seats in the 15th Melaka state election in 2021.
“We need to prove to the public that the party remains acceptable and capable of producing elected representatives who can serve as the people’s voice in the Melaka State Legislative Assembly. We will begin this struggle without holding a single state seat.
“This challenge requires PKR to adopt a different approach from previous elections, including moving away from patronage-based politics towards a more mature political style,” he told Bernama.
In the 2021 state election, Barisan Nasional (BN) formed the state government after winning 21 of the 28 seats, while Pakatan Harapan (PH) secured five and Perikatan Nasional (PN) two.
However, the Melaka State Executive Council (Exco) lineup also includes PH assemblymen, reflecting a Unity Government arrangement similar to that at the federal level.
Adam Adli, who is also a PKR Central Leadership Council (MPP) member, said PH would enter the state election with humility, seeking to establish itself as a coalition that remained close to the people and responsive to the needs of a multiracial society.
“We do not wish to label the public based on their various political leanings. Instead, we respect the maturity of voters in making their own assessments based on the proposals put forward,” he said.
The Hang Tuah Jaya Member of Parliament said PKR must continue to understand and address the needs of all segments of society, particularly issues involving the cost of living, youth, education, home ownership, wages and mental health.
“What we need to do is offer ideas, principles and policies that can benefit the people. This approach aligns with the ‘Justice for All’ concept, which aims to ensure that the party serves as a platform for all the Melaka people, regardless of their background,” he said.
Adam Adli, who is also Deputy Higher Education Minister, said a party’s success should not be measured solely by political dominance, but by the extent to which its ideas and policies benefit the community.
The mandate of the Melaka state government expires on Dec 31.
On the 2026 PKR National Congress, Adam Adli said it would focus on strengthening the party ahead of the state election.
Melaka will host the congress at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh from Aug 13 to 16, with Prime Minister and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim scheduled to officiate the event on Aug 15.
