KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- The High Court here has awarded executive vice-chairman of Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din a total of RM275,000 after allowing his two civil suits against former senator Datuk Seri Daljit Singh.
In a judgment delivered on July 30, Judge Roz Mawar Rozain ordered Daljit to pay Mohamad Salim, who is also Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman, damages of RM100,000 for defamation.
The court also ordered Daljit, who is People's Progressive Party (PPP) treasurer general, to repay a loan of RM100,000 to Mohamad Salim, as well as RM75,000 in costs for the two suits.
The court also issued an injunction to restrain Daljit from similarly defaming Mohamad Salim in future.
Counsel Harjinder Singh, who acted for Daljit, confirmed the matter when contacted by Bernama.
Mohamad Salim, represented by counsel Dhinesh Bhaskaran, sued Daljit in June 2023, claiming that he had uttered and published the defamatory words “Salim cheated me” to lawyer Selva Kumar Mookiah in Bahasa Melayu in 2021.
He said Daljit followed this up with a text message about Mohamad Salim to Selva the following morning.
Mohamad Salim claimed that in April 2023, Daljit uttered and published another defamatory statement that was sent to the then managing editor of a news portal.
The plaintiff said Daljit’s remarks implied that he was untrustworthy, a cheat, fraudster and liar, and that he had engaged in illegal and immoral activities.
He also said Daljit had injured his reputation and name.
