Nissan Returns To Quarterly Profit, Cuts Vehicle Sales Forecast

TOKYO, Aug 3 (Bernama-dpa) -- Japanese carmaker Nissan Motor on Monday returned to profit in the first quarter on higher revenue, but lowered its full-year vehicle sales forecast, citing a tougher business environment in China, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

Net income attributable to owners of the parent totalled 3.8 billion yen (US$24 million), compared with a net loss of 115.8 billion yen (US$735 million) a year earlier.

Operating profit came to 77.9 billion yen (US$495 million), versus an operating loss of 79.1 billion yen (US$502 million) a year earlier, while the operating margin improved to 2.6 per cent from negative 2.9 per cent.

Revenue rose to 2.964 trillion yen (US$18.8 billion) from 2.707 trillion yen (US$17.2 billion) a year earlier.

Nissan lowered its fiscal 2026 global vehicle sales forecast to 3.15 million units from 3.3 million previously, citing a more challenging business environment in China.

The company said it continues to face external headwinds, including higher raw material costs and geopolitical uncertainty, but expects favourable foreign exchange rates, one-off gains booked in the first quarter and other factors to help offset some of the pressure.

Nissan reaffirmed its fiscal 2026 financial outlook, saying it remains on track to deliver its turnaround plan through continued cost reductions and measures to strengthen competitiveness.

“The environment remains challenging, particularly in China and West Asia, but our direction is clear. We are managing disruption where it exists, building momentum where we see opportunity, and executing Re:Nissan with discipline and urgency,” Chief Executive Ivan Espinosa said, referring to the turnaround plan.

In China, Nissan said it is rebalancing its business through tighter inventory management, accelerating its new energy vehicle (NEV) rollout with models including the N6, N7, NX8 and Frontier Pro, and expanding into overseas markets.

The company said the strategy would strengthen the business for growth from fiscal 2027.
