GLASGOW, Aug 2 (Bernama) -- National track cyclist Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri finished 10th in the women’s keirin event at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games here today.
In the seventh-12th placing race at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, Nurul Izzah finished fourth among the six riders.
Emma Finucane of Wales bagged the gold medal, while New Zealand’s Ellesse Andrews and Australia’s Kristina Clonan took silver and bronze, respectively.
Another Malaysia rider, Nur Alyssa Mohd Farid, failed to advance from the heats and was classified 13th alongside Canada’s Sarah Orban.
It is a sad end to Nurul Izzah’s Glasgow campaign after coming close to winning a medal for the national contingent earlier, finishing fourth in the women’s sprint after losing to Rhian Edmunds of Wales in the bronze medal race.
But the 22-year-old Nurul Izzah still produced an improved performance compared to when she made her Games debut at the 2022 Birmingham edition, where she crashed out in the first round of keirin and finished 22nd in the sprint event.
Overall, the national cycling squad improved on its performance at Birmingham 2022 after bagging a gold medal through Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang in men’s keirin at this edition.
At the previous edition, Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom was the only cyclist to deliver a medal when he clinched a bronze in the same event after Malaysia failed to win a medal at the 2018 Gold Coast edition.
