KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 (Bernama) -- Renowned singer and vocal coach Datuk Syafinaz Selamat says her reappointment as Distinguished Adjunct Professor at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris’ (UPSI) Faculty of Music and Performing Arts (FMSP) is more than a title; it is a profound responsibility to drive music education forward in Malaysia.
She said the appointment, effective Aug 1, 2026, to July 31, 2028, unlocks new opportunities for her to share knowledge, develop talent and build a lasting legacy.
"Being appointed as Adjunct Professor for the first time was an honour, but the second time is a great responsibility. It reminds me that trust is not just given once, but must continuously be proven," she told Bernama today.
Previously, Syafinaz had been appointed as Adjunct Professor at FMSP UPSI for a one-year term from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, as part of the university's efforts to strengthen ties between academia and the music industry.
Syafinaz said one of her key focuses is to strengthen music education, particularly in the field of vocals, by establishing it as an academic discipline grounded in research, pedagogy and voice science.
"To me, vocals are not just about the ability to sing. It is a process of shaping creativity, communication, discipline and identity.
“That is why music teachers must be equipped with knowledge, so they can not only produce good singers but also individuals who truly understand the art as a whole," she said.
She believes that quality music education can transform public perception of the music field as a professional career.
Syafinaz said that when a music career is built on knowledge, professionalism and integrity, the field will be more respected and recognised as a profession that contributes significantly to cultural development, education and the nation.
Meanwhile, Syafinaz said she will continue organising workshops and seminars in a more structured manner, as a continuation of the programmes she has previously conducted.
