IMO 2026: Malaysia Makes History, Breaks Into World’s Top 20

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- Malaysia achieved a historic milestone by finishing among the top 20 countries at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2026) in Shanghai, China.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said Malaysia finished 19th overall among 117 participating countries, surpassing its performance from the previous year.

“For the first time, Malaysia has broken into the world’s top 20, ranking 19th overall among 117 countries competing at IMO 2026,” she said in a congratulatory post on her official Facebook page tonight.

She said the Malaysian team achieved an impressive haul of one gold, three silvers, one bronze and one Honourable Mention, scoring 142 points overall, and improving on last year’s performance (139 points).

Six talented students representing Malaysia achieved the historic result at the prestigious event held from July 10 to 21, according to a post on the Olimpiad Matematik Malaysia Facebook page.
