Johor Polls: 26.43 Per Cent Voters Turnout As of 11 am
JOHOR BAHRU, July 11 (Bernama) -- Voter turnout in the 16th Johor state election reached 26.43 per cent as of 11 am today, surpassing the figure recorded at the same time in the previous state election.
Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said about 709,000 voters had cast their ballots by 11 am.
He said voter turnout at the same point during the 2022 Johor state election stood at only about 21 per cent, reflecting a marked improvement this time.
"We hope this momentum will continue throughout the day so that as many registered voters as possible come out to cast their ballots," he told reporters after inspecting the polling centre at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bandar Uda Utama in the Perling constituency here today.
Ramlan said rain in several areas, including Muar, Kluang and Johor Bahru, could dampen voter turnout later in the day.
"As a result of the rain, we expect some disruption to voter turnout. But we can still achieve around 65 to 70 per cent," he said.
On the polling process, Ramlan said the EC had not received any reports of serious incidents so far, with only minor election-related offences recorded.
Overall, as of last night, a total of 799 reports had been received, of which 96 cases were under police investigation, while the remainder involved the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and other election offences, including the unauthorised display of campaign posters.
"The cases under police investigation will be left to the police to handle," he said.
He also dismissed claims that voters wearing certain attire, such as shorts, were barred from casting their ballots.
"There is no issue regarding a dress code, as it is not provided for under the election laws," he said.
On cases involving elderly voters who had gone to the wrong polling centres, Ramlan said voters should check their designated polling centres in advance to avoid confusion on polling day.
However, he said the EC had also set up checking counters at polling centres and would provide every possible assistance to affected voters to enable them to fulfil their civic duty.
