By Kenny Teng

BANGKOK, July 10 (Bernama) -- Thailand will host two informal meetings of ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ on Myanmar in the Thai capital on Sunday, as the regional bloc steps up efforts to engage with Myanmar more effectively.

The meetings comprise the Informal Meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers with the Foreign Minister of Myanmar and the Extended Informal Consultation on Myanmar.

Deputy spokesperson for Thai Foreign Ministry, Maratee Nalita Andamo, said the meetings would be chaired by the Philippines as ASEAN's current Chair, with Thailand serving as host.

Maratee said the consultations would allow participants to exchange views candidly and openly and provide an important opportunity for ASEAN foreign ministers to engage in meaningful discussions on the situation in Myanmar.

"They will also discuss ways to advance ASEAN's collective efforts to implement the Five-Point Consensus in a concrete and effective manner, with a view to supporting peace and stability in Myanmar," she told reporters during a media briefing at the ministry on Friday.

Maratee said the informal meetings marked an important step towards a gradual and principled engagement with Myanmar to encourage positive and tangible developments in the country.

"These are informal consultations and do not alter ASEAN's established position or decisions regarding the situation in Myanmar," she said.

She added that attendance and the level of representation from participating countries were still being finalised.

Philippine Secretary for Foreign Affairs Maria Theresa Lazaro, Thailand's Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow, and Myanmar's Foreign Minister U Tin Maung Swe are expected to attend the meetings.

No official outcome document would be issued after the meetings, she added.
