KLIA Terminal 1 BHS Upgrade Works Begin At International Baggage Reclaim Carousels
PUTRAJAYA, July 10 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has begun the next phase of the Baggage Handling System (BHS) replacement programme at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 with enhancement works on baggage reclaim carousels for international arriving passengers.
MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said hoarding installation works at Carousel E began yesterday to facilitate the replacement of its baggage reclaim belt, while similar works at Carousel F will commence on Aug 31.
He said the two phases are expected to be completed by January 2027 before the modernisation programme proceeds in stages at the remaining baggage reclaim carousels.
“The BHS replacement programme is being delivered in carefully planned phases to ensure KLIA remains fully operational while we modernise critical airport infrastructure.
“Each completed phase strengthens the system’s reliability, resilience and capacity, enabling us to better serve passengers and airline partners well into the future,” he said in a statement today.
Mohd Izani said the phased implementation would also enable KLIA to remain fully operational while critical airport infrastructure is upgraded, with measures put in place in collaboration with airline and ground-handling partners to minimise disruption throughout the enhancement works.
“While passengers may experience some temporary congestion within the baggage reclaim hall, baggage delivery operations will continue as normal,” he said.
The airport operator in the statement informed that four temporary baggage collection areas will be activated when required to manage baggage volumes and prevent overflowing on the carousels.
It said clear signage will identify the respective flights, while baggage operations, ground handling, and customer experience teams will be on hand to assist passengers in locating and collecting their baggage.
MAHB also ensured that safety remains the highest priority throughout each phase of the modernisation programme, with all hoarding installation and construction activities being carried out in full compliance with operational requirements to safeguard passengers, airport personnel and daily operations.
