Pakistani Navy Finds Cargo Plane Wreckage, But No Trace Of Crew
ISLAMABAD, July 9 (Bernama-dpa) -- Fragments of the wreckage of a cargo plane operated by a Pakistani airline have been found in the Arabian Sea, but there is still no trace of the five-member crew, the Pakistani airport authority said on Thursday, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
Naval units located fragments of the Boeing 737 off the coast near Amara, west of Karachi, after a 12-hour search, the authority said in a post on the social media platform X.
Contact with the aircraft was lost late on Tuesday.
Rough seas following the start of the monsoon were hampering the search operation, the airport authority said.
K2 Airways named the five crew members in a post on Facebook. “K2 Airways is fully cooperating with the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority and other government agencies. We continue to pray, earnestly, for the safety of our colleagues,” it said.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his sorrow over the accident and offered his condolences to the families of the crew members.
The plane rapidly lost altitude and then disappeared from air traffic control radar on Tuesday evening, after the crew had reported navigation problems, according to the airport authority.
The plane was flying from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to Karachi.
K2 Airways, a private Pakistani airline, began operations in 2018.
Earlier reports said the crew consisted of two pilots, two engineers and a loadmaster.
The Boeing 737 entered service in 1999 as a passenger aircraft before later being converted for cargo operations.
