MPI, Puspakom Partner To Promote Road Safety Through Media Literacy

PUTRAJAYA, July 8 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) and Puspakom Sdn Bhd have forged a strategic partnership to strengthen road safety awareness through media literacy initiatives and public communication campaigns to enhance public understanding of vehicle maintenance and safe vehicle operation.

In a statement today, MPI said the collaboration was formalised during a meeting between Puspakom chief executive officer Mahmood Razak Bahman and MPI president Datuk Yong Soo Heong at the MPI Training Centre here today.

"The programme aims to educate the public on key aspects of vehicle maintenance and road safety that vehicle owners should be aware of," the statement said.

The discussions also covered the development of a media literacy programme incorporating information on the latest technologies used in the vehicle inspection industry, including the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the efficiency of inspection processes.

Mahmood said the collaboration has the potential to enhance public awareness of road safety by delivering accurate, accessible and fact-based information.

Meanwhile, Yong welcomed Puspakom's commitment to the strategic partnership, saying MPI would explore suitable implementation approaches, including the development of media literacy modules, training programmes, public communication campaigns and educational initiatives to strengthen public understanding of road safety.

During the visit, Puspakom presented a RM20,000 contribution to MPI in support of the Malaysian Journalists Night 2026, which will be held on July 17 at The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

Mahmood said the contribution reflects Puspakom's commitment to supporting the development of professional journalism in Malaysia while recognising the media's role as a strategic partner in disseminating accurate information to the public.

"Professional journalism plays a vital role in helping the public make informed decisions based on facts and credible information.

"For many years, the media has remained a trusted source of information and has played an important role in shaping public understanding of issues that affect daily life, including vehicle safety and road safety," he said.

Malaysian Journalists Night is an annual event organised by MPI to recognise excellence in journalism and honour the contributions of journalists and media organisations to the nation's development.
