PH's Cheah Urges Supporters To Maintain Decorum, Reject Provocation In Johor Polls

JOHOR BAHRU, July 8 (Bernama) -- Pakatan Harapan (PH) supporters have been urged to campaign in a clean, mature and responsible manner, and to refrain from responding to provocations for the 16th Johor State Election.

PH candidate for the Kukup state seat, Cheah Chee Hong, said that while political competition during the election is temporary, the bonds within the Kukup community must be preserved for the long term.

"The election lasts only a few days, but we will continue to live together as neighbours and members of the Kukup community. Whether we win or lose, our relationships with one another must be maintained," he said in a Facebook post today.

Cheah said all parties should conduct their campaigns with dignity and mutual respect, allowing voters to evaluate candidates based on their ideas, track records and policy proposals rather than acts of provocation or vandalism.

He stressed that damaging political opponents' campaign materials does not reflect the values of the local community.

"Yesterday in Penerok, I was informed that one of my campaign banners had been defaced with inappropriate words.

"In a democracy, everyone has the right to make their own choice. We may hold different views, support different political parties and compete in the same contest, but mutual respect should never be lost because of political differences," he said.

In this Saturday’s 16th Johor state election, the Kukup seat will witness a straight fight between Cheah and Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Md Israk Abdullah.
