Cikgu Yeo Questions Delay In Pekan Nanas-Ulu Choh Bypass Project

PONTIAN, July 8 (Bernama) -- Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for the Pekan Nanas state seat Yeo Tung Siong has questioned the delay in the construction of the proposed bypass linking Jalan Sawah in Pekan Nanas and Ulu Choh, claiming the project was postponed as the state government prioritised other developments.

Yeo, better known as Cikgu Yeo, said the project was crucial to easing long-standing traffic congestion in Pekan Nanas, but its implementation had been deferred several times.

He said that during his tenure as Pekan Nanas assemblyman from 2018 to 2022, he had repeatedly raised the proposal during Johor State Legislative Assembly sittings.

According to him, those efforts led to the project being included in the Johor Budget 2021 under the Johor Infrastructure package for road and bridge construction, before the land acquisition process began.

"However, based on the state government's reply in the State Assembly in 2024, the project was postponed in 2023 and 2024 due to rising construction costs, the need to increase the project ceiling and the prioritisation of other projects," he said in a statement today.

Yeo also questioned the delay, noting that the state government had reportedly recorded a fiscal surplus of RM95.38 million in 2024.

He claimed that the postponement had forced heavy vehicles, including sand lorries, to continue using Jalan Sawah, worsening traffic congestion and disrupting residents' daily activities.

Yeo said he was seeking a fresh mandate from Pekan Nanas voters to enable him to continue monitoring and advocating for the implementation of the bypass project until its completion.

The Pekan Nanas seat will see a straight fight between Yeo and incumbent Tan Eng Meng of Barisan Nasional (BN) in the Johor state election.

A total of 172 candidates are contesting 56 seats in the 16th Johor state election, with 2,727,926 eligible voters set to cast their ballots on Saturday.
