Johor Polls: Faizul Confident PH Can Wrest Tanjung Surat From BN

By Muhammad Saufee Rosman

JOHOR BAHRU, July 8 (Bernama) -- Rejecting the notion that Pakatan Harapan (PH) is merely making up the numbers in the Tanjung Surat state seat, the coalition’s candidate Faizul Abdul Ghani said he is contesting the 16th Johor state election to win what has long been considered a Barisan Nasional (BN) stronghold.

The 56-year-old said the political landscape in the constituency is changing, with grassroots support increasingly tilting towards PH, making him optimistic that the coalition can spring a surprise by defeating the incumbent, Aznan Tamin of BN, in the straight fight.

“As far as I'm concerned, the question of whether this seat is easy or difficult to win does not arise. Our principle remains the same: we will keep fighting. Alhamdulillah, the response and acceptance from voters in the Tanjung Surat state constituency have been very encouraging.

“I hope we will see a major change on polling day. I am contesting to win, and I am confident and optimistic that I can do so, insya-Allah,” he told Bernama.

Faizul said his confidence has been reinforced by the cross-party approach adopted throughout the campaign, noting that he has received a positive response from people across the political spectrum.

Commenting on the sabotage of campaign materials during the first week of the Johor state election campaign, Faizul said the incidents had not dampened the spirits of either himself or the PH campaign machinery, as they had long been accustomed to various forms of political provocation.

“I have been with PKR for nearly 27 years. In the past, the situation was much worse, with campaign materials being burned, torn down and discarded. So we regard this as just another challenge.

“I have simply reminded our campaign workers to remain patient, avoid responding to provocation and stay focused on engaging with the people,” he said.

Faizul said the PH campaign machinery is now focusing on consolidating support across the Tanjung Surat state constituency after having visited almost every locality, with some areas visited more than once.

On his manifesto, he said one of his priorities is addressing issues affecting the fishing community, particularly in Sungai Rengit, including matters related to the approval of fishing licences and upgrading ageing infrastructure such as breakwaters and jetties.

He also aims to develop Tanjung Surat into a tourism destination to help boost the incomes of homestay operators and local traders, particularly in Sungai Rengit, Batu Layar and Tanjung Belungkor, which he said have strong tourism potential.

A total of 172 candidates are contesting 56 state seats in the Johor state election, with polling set for this Saturday (July 11).
