“It Was Very Moving” – Klose Calls Messi After World Cup Record

BERLIN, July 7 (Bernama-dpa) -- Former World Cup record goalscorer Miroslav Klose conveyed his congratulations to his successor Lionel Messi by phone, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

The former Germany striker had held the men's all-time World Cup scoring record with 16 goals before Messi broke it at the current tournament.

The Argentina icon has since moved on to 20 goals, with France's Kylian Mbappé following on 19.

“Messi is an incredible phenomenon. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni was my team-mate at Lazio, we are still in regular contact. He arranged a phone call between Messi and me after he equalled my World Cup goals record. It was very moving,” Klose said.

He made the comments at a recent World Cup talk at German second-division side Nuremberg, where he is the coach. The club only published the quotes on Tuesday.

Klose added: “Messi and I of course, came up against each other on the pitch from time to time. It was always nice and respectful. But this phone call was the first time we had spoken at greater length away from football. He said he would send me a signed shirt.”
