MCMC To Ensure Optimum 4G, 5G Coverage At RTS Link Stations Before 2027 Operations - Fahmi
JOHOR BAHRU, July 7 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been asked to ensure 4G and 5G network coverage at the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link stations is at an optimum level before the service begins operations on Jan 1, 2027.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said this was among the ministry's priorities to ensure commuters enjoy a seamless digital experience from the first day the cross-border rail service begins operating.
"I intend to conduct an inspection with the MCMC, but we will do so during a future visit because I have asked the commission to ensure 4G and 5G coverage at the RTS stations is at its optimum level before operations commence on Jan 1, 2027, God willing," he told reporters after visiting the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) operations room in conjunction with the Johor state election here today.
On weak internet coverage in several rural areas that continues to hamper digital payments via QR codes, Fahmi said most of the issues are expected to be resolved through the implementation of Phase Two of the National Digital Network (JENDELA).
He said the construction of new telecommunications towers typically takes between 12 and 24 months as it involves land acquisition and approvals from local authorities.
"In certain areas, we are able to leverage passive infrastructure such as existing towers, but these may not yet be equipped with the necessary equipment of telecommunications service providers," he said.
Fahmi said that besides constructing new towers, the government was also exploring other technologies, including the Starlink satellite internet service, to provide faster internet access to communities in areas with limited connectivity.
He said coverage challenges in northern Johor and the east coast were also influenced by the terrain, vast oil palm plantation areas and widely dispersed populations, requiring different approaches to address the issue.
"The cost of building new towers may not be commercially attractive, but there are now various alternative technologies available. I leave it to the MCMC to examine the matter," he said.
The RTS Link Project is a railway shuttle link approximately four kilometres length with two stations, one in Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru and one in Woodlands North in Singapore.
