Kuala Perlis-satun Ferry Service To Resume Operations This Thursday
SATUN (Thailand), July 7 (Bernama) -- The reopening of the Kuala Perlis-Satun, Thailand ferry services this Thursday (July 9) is expected to catalyse cross-border tourism cooperation while boosting the tourism sector and economies of both Malaysia and Thailand.
Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah said the reopening of the sea route, which has been inactive since the COVID-19 pandemic, is expected to usher in a new chapter in regional tourism development involving cooperation between the Perlis Geopark, Satun UNESCO Global Geopark and Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark.
“We will establish a committee comprising representatives from Perlis, Satun and Langkawi. This will help make the tourism sector more attractive while fostering greater cooperation among the three areas,” he told reporters after participating in a simulation of the Kuala Perlis-Satun ferry operations at Tammalang Jetty here yesterday.
Abu Bakar said the state government is also in discussions with ferry operators to ensure that the fares remain competitive, while exploring the possibility of offering promotional fares during the initial stage to encourage usage of the service.
He said the ferry service will begin with one trip daily before the frequency is increased according to demand.
“The state government is also carrying out upgrading works at the Kuala Perlis Roll-on-Roll-off (Ro-Ro) Terminal, including the construction of a dedicated route to improve ferry operation facilities,” he said.
Abu Bakar said all aspects of the service, including ferry operations, safety measures and standard operating procedures, ran smoothly during the simulation, and relevant agencies in both countries were ready to ensure the successful reopening of the sea route.
In terms of regulatory requirements, he said the necessary procedures involving the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, Malaysian Immigration Department, Marine Department and other security agencies had also been complied with to ensure the smooth resumption of the route.
