Johor Polls: Shafwan Banks On Nine Years Of Service In Bukit Permai Bid
By Marfika Adnan Haris Fadzilah
KULAI, July 7 (Bernama) -- "I am not a candidate who was brought in at the last minute or someone just for show. This is where I have served and built my political experience over the past nine years. Whether I win or lose, my commitment to the community remains unchanged.”
That was the assurance given by Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for the Bukit Permai state seat, Mohamad Shafwan Ani, who is relying on his years of grassroots involvement and behind-the-scenes work to gain voters’ confidence in the Johor polls.
Although contesting for the first time, Mohamad Shafwan, 33, sees the opportunity as a platform to demonstrate his leadership capabilities and is prepared for a tough four-cornered contest.
The Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) graduate in Political Studies and Government said his experience as special officer at the Kulai Member of Parliament’s Office since 2017 had given him a deep understanding of local issues and residents’ concerns.
The Skudai native, who has lived in the area for almost a decade, is banking on the Bukit Permai Action Plan to win the support of 44,819 registered voters. The plan focuses on four key areas - the Mobile State Assembly Service Centre, Targeted Education, Balanced Infrastructure and Bukit Permai Sihat.
“Through the Mobile State Assembly Service Centre and Bukit Permai Sihat programme, we aim to ease residents’ daily affairs by bringing service counters and free health screenings directly to strategic locations.
“This is a practical measure to reduce the burden of rising living costs, particularly among senior citizens and B40 residents who may have limited time,” he told Bernama.
He said efforts under the Targeted Education and Balanced Infrastructure initiatives would also be strengthened to address development gaps in the constituency.
“Educational assistance will be provided based on needs, while critical issues such as flash floods, drainage problems and road widening in village and Felda areas will be addressed to improve residents’ quality of life,” he said.
Commenting on the recent sabotage involving the tearing of his campaign posters, Mohamad Shafwan, who is Johor DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) deputy secretary, said the incident had not affected his resolve and instead motivated him to work harder.
“The matter has been left entirely to the authorities for investigation. My focus and that of the campaign team now is on the remaining campaign period, especially engaging with young voters, who make up about 30 to 40 per cent of the electorate in this constituency.
“I am not asking the people to measure me solely by posters, talks or promises made during this two-week campaign. Instead, look at my journey, sincerity and the challenges I have faced while serving them over the years,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Mohamad Shafwan said he was grateful that his campaign had progressed well, with many volunteers coming forward to support his efforts to secure the people’s mandate.
He also expressed appreciation to his volunteers for their encouragement and contributions throughout the campaign.
The Johor state election sees 172 candidates contesting 56 state seats, with polling day set for Saturday while early voting is being held today.
