Anwar Moved By Elderly Couple's Gesture During Johor Visit

KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his gratitude to an 86-year-old who pedalled nearly a kilometre on his trishaw to fulfil his wife's wish of seeing the premier up close.

In a Facebook post, Anwar also apologised for not having the opportunity to meet the couple when he stopped for breakfast at an eatery in Senggarang, Batu Pahat, Johor, today.

“InsyaAllah, we will meet another time. Thank you for your encouragement and support. May Allah SWT bless both of you with good health and ease all your affairs,” he said.

Bernama previously reported that Abdul Razak Pelangga, 86, decided to take his wife, Jamilah Samsudin, 64, on a trishaw from their home in Kampung Parit Bugis to Kedai Kopi Hailam Sri Medan in the small town after learning yesterday that the country's top leader would be visiting.

The imam of Masjid Raudhatul Jannah Parit Bugis said that although he had the option of driving a car or riding a motorcycle, he chose to take his wife by trishaw to avoid the difficulty of finding a parking space.

Earlier, Anwar spent about 50 minutes having breakfast at the eatery and meeting local residents during a meet-and-greet programme in the Senggarang state constituency in conjunction with the Johor State Election.
