No NRD Identification Documents Possessed By Bangladeshi National Detained In Kuantan
PUTRAJAYA, July 5 (Bernama) -- No identity documents issued by the National Registration Department (NRD) were found in the possession of a Bangladeshi man who was detained after being suspected of possessing a Malaysian passport that did not belong to him during a special operation in Kuantan, Pahang, yesterday.
The NRD in a statement today said that the man was detained as a result of a joint operation with the Immigration Department (JIM) following social media intelligence or Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) regarding the circulation of a photograph of an individual holding a Bangladeshi passport along with a Malaysian International Passport (PMA).
Preliminary investigations found that the individual involved is active on several social media platforms including Facebook, TikTok and Threads, and is believed to be working in the construction sector in Malaysia.
"At the same time, the individual also had a Malaysian passport suspected not to belong to him, thereby necessitating immediate detection and verification actions by the authorities," said the NRD.
He said that the NRD will continue to strengthen its intelligence capabilities, information sharing, and strategic cooperation with JIM, the Royal Malaysia Police, and other enforcement agencies to combat identity abuse, document forgery, and any threats that could undermine the security and sovereignty of the national identification system.
The NRD said further investigations are being conducted to identify how the passport that does not belong to him was obtained, the purpose of its possession, and whether there are elements of travel document abuse, identity impersonation, or other offences under the provisions of the applicable laws.
The department also urges the public to continue providing information related to any activities suspected of involving identity abuse or national travel document misuse.
Every piece of information received will be investigated professionally and appropriate action will be taken in accordance with legal provisions.
Earlier, a video went viral on social media showing a man believed to be a Bangladeshi holding two passports, allegedly involving a PMA and a Bangladeshi passport.
The post has sparked various reactions and calls from the public for an immediate investigation to be conducted.
