Kelantan Police Shift Anti-scam Campaign To Social Media, Broadcasting Platforms
KOTA BHARU, July 5 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in Kelantan has revamped its public education strategy on commercial crimes by shifting its focus to social media and major broadcasting stations to reach a wider audience.
The more aggressive approach follows findings that conventional methods, including face-to-face talks and billboard campaigns, are no longer effective in disseminating information on preventing online scams.
Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said he had instructed the acting head of the state's Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) to fully utilise electronic media platforms, as well as other local radio and television stations.
"We are concerned about the increasing number of commercial crime cases. Based on our observations, the previous approach of conducting talks at schools and with local communities appears to be less effective.
"Therefore, we now want to strengthen our campaign through social media. I have instructed our media officers to incorporate commercial crime issues and public awareness messages into the PDRM Kelantan TikTok account," he told Bernama recently.
Commenting on physical promotional methods, Mohd Yusoff said roadside billboard campaigns were also no longer producing the desired results due to the limited time road users had to absorb the information.
"Even if we display the message on billboards, not many people understand it because drivers do not have enough time to read the details while driving.
"Commercial crime prevention messages differ from other campaigns as they require the public to listen, read and study the information carefully, rather than merely glancing at it," he said.
He expressed hope that the regular appearance of CCID officers on radio and television stations would provide an effective platform to share current issues and the latest criminal modus operandi, while educating the public in the state to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to scammers.
