Malaysia, Iran Look To Expand Agricultural, Food Security Cooperation
KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 (Bernama) -- Iran is interested in increasing imports of several Malaysian products, including tropical fruits, palm oil, urea and garments, while also expanding market access for meat and dairy products between the two countries, says Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu.
He said the matter was discussed during his meeting with his counterpart from the Islamic Republic of Iran, Gholamreza Nouri Ghezeljeh, here today as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the agriculture and agrofood sectors.
In a video uploaded by the media team of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Islamic Republic of Iran and shared on his Facebook page, Mohamad said both sides also discussed a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which was currently at the technical stage for refinement before being finalised.
"We also discussed efforts to strengthen agricultural technology transfer for the mutual benefit of both countries.
"Their commitment and preparedness in the agrofood sector are among the examples we can learn from," he said.
Mohamad also expressed admiration for Iran's long-term planning in ensuring the country's food security despite facing wartime conditions.
Earlier, Mohamad led the Malaysian government delegation to pay their last respects to former Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the Grand Mosalla in Tehran.
In a Facebook post, he said the tribute ceremony for the late leader would be held over several days, beginning in Tehran before continuing to Qom, Najaf and Karbala, with the remains to be laid to rest at the Imam Reza Holy Shrine in Mashhad on July 9.
The tribute and mourning ceremony is being held more than 100 days after Khamenei was killed in an attack involving the United States and Israel on Feb 28.
