FAMA Perlis Outlines Proactive Measures To Tackle Durian Glut

KANGAR, July 2 (Bernama) -- The Perlis Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) has outlined measures to address the expected durian glut during the peak season of the ‘King of Fruits’ from June to August.

Perlis FAMA director Mohd Anzara Azizan said one initiative is the Perlis Local Fruit Fest, which involves 10 seasonal fruit entrepreneurs and is held in collaboration with the State Agriculture Department at the Sungai Batu Pahat Exotic Fruit Park near here on July 25 and 26.

He added that another move is the ‘Eat More Local Fruits Campaign’, held alongside the 10th World Cup Woodball Championship at Laman Woodball, Syed Sirajuddin Areeb Putra Sports Complex, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) Pauh Putra Campus, in Arau, from July 24 to 30.

"We are also reactivating the FAMA Beseri Fresh Fruit Processing Centre to process frozen durian paste for supply to food and agro-based industry (IMAT) entrepreneurs involved in the production of downstream durian products," he said in a statement today.

Mohd Anzara said FAMA marketing outlets will also help mitigate the durian overproduction through three Fresh Fruit Stalls (GBBS) in Taman Guru Jaya, Kangar, and Jejawi.

"To date, nearly 160 metric tonnes (MT) of durians have been successfully marketed through these GBBS outlets, involving several varieties such as Durian Kampung, Musang King, Black Thorn, and others," he said.

Meanwhile, he said the Kangar Operations Centre, the primary collection hub for Perlis agricultural produce, has made direct purchases totalling 5.5 MT of Durian Kampung from Perak and Kedah since June 18.

"To ensure smooth delivery of market services in Perlis, three Temporary Seasonal Fruit Buying Centres will be established in major production areas, namely Dusun Bukit Air, Dusun Batu Pahat, and Dusun Bukit Manik in Beseri," he said.

Mohd Anzara added that Perlis FAMA is implementing these durian marketing initiatives in line with the 2026 Seasonal Fruit Marketing and Intervention Plan, which is being proactively rolled out nationwide.

He said Perlis FAMA remains committed to safeguarding national food security, particularly in the state, by preventing waste or spoilage. Swift intervention will ensure any durian glut in Perlis is effectively managed.
