Johor Polls: Amirul Huzni Banks On Youthful Energy In Sedili
By Marfika Adnan Haris Fadzilah
JOHOR BHARU, July 2 (Bernama) -- Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for the Sedili state seat, Amirul Huzni Onn, is unfazed by the prospect of taking on two more experienced rivals in the Barisan Nasional (BN) stronghold in the upcoming Johor state election.
Instead, the 29-year-old Pulai Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) Youth chief sees his youth and status as a political newcomer as strengths that enable him to offer fresh and dynamic leadership.
He said contesting against incumbent BN candidate Muszaide Makmor and former three-term Sedili assemblyman Rasman Ithnain, who is representing Perikatan Nasional (PN), was a valuable learning experience as well as an opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of the younger generation.
“As a young candidate, we are seen as a blank canvas. There are no blemishes or past shortcomings that would suggest we have failed to deliver.
“If measured by traditional influence, I admit I am far behind. But, in any contest, the finish line is simply winning or losing, and I believe every generation has its own role to play,” he told Bernama.
On his election manifesto, Amirul Huzni said he preferred not to make promises that would be difficult to fulfil, opting instead to focus on issues that directly address the needs of local residents.
He said his top priority, if elected, would be to realise the long-awaited construction of a fuel station in Sedili, a facility much anticipated by the local community, particularly fishermen and anglers.
“My main focus is to see the fuel station built because, as far as I know, the site has already been identified and the land was cleared more than a year ago. However, nothing has materialised to date,” he said.
Despite the political contest, Amirul Huzni said his campaign emphasised the importance of conducting electioneering in a mature and respectful manner, including engaging positively with his opponents to preserve harmony within the local community.
“Even on nomination day, I told my opponents that I was here to learn and to campaign in a healthy spirit. As politicians, we must always be magnanimous in carrying out our responsibilities,” he said.
Polling for the Johor state election has been set for July 11, with early voting on July 7.
