Johor Polls: Haniff Seeks Transformation, Hasrunizah Continuity In Pulai Sebatang
By Nur Fadhliana Shaari
PONTIAN, July 1 (Bernama) -- The contest for the Pulai Sebatang state seat in the 16th Johor state election on July 11 is shaping up as a clash between Pakatan Harapan's (PH) vision for sustainable development and Barisan Nasional's (BN) promise of continuity.
PH candidate Haniff @ Ghazali Hosman, 46, is campaigning on a pledge to transform Pulai Sebatang into a must-visit destination through balanced development while safeguarding the livelihoods of fishermen and farmers.
Describing the constituency as a “gem” with untapped potential, he said its strategic location, encompassing Pontian town and lying close to neighbouring economic growth corridors, offers significant opportunities for investment.
“We want to attract suitable investments so that development benefits residents without sidelining the traditional sectors that remain the backbone of the local economy,” he told Bernama at PH’s Pulai Sebatang operations centre here today.
Haniff, who previously contested the Pontian parliamentary seat in 2013 and the Benut state seat in 2022, said he would also champion long-standing grassroots concerns, including compensation for fishermen in Pontian Besar and drainage problems that frequently cause flooding in the farming areas of Parit Datuk.
Haniff said his campaign has centred on walkabouts and house-to-house visits to understand voters’ concerns better.
Confident PH can replicate its 2018 success in the constituency, he said feedback from residents during his grassroots engagements had been encouraging.
Meanwhile, BN incumbent Hasrunizah Hassan said the proposed expansion of Pontian Hospital has been among the issues most frequently raised by voters throughout the campaign.
She said the project is now closer to becoming a reality after approval was granted for a new hospital block, with the procurement process currently underway.
If returned to office, Hasrunizah said she would also focus on completing the remaining 25 village road projects from the 75 applications identified since she became the area’s representative in 2022.
Hasrunizah also pledged to continue implementing state welfare initiatives, including the ‘Kasih Johor’ assistance programme, housing aid and first-home ownership schemes.
Relying on a combination of traditional campaigning and social media outreach, she said BN’s track record over the past term deserved renewed support from voters.
“We have done our best. Based on our experience and achievements over the past term, we hope voters will continue to place their trust in us and renew our mandate,” she said after the Johor TVET MARA Roadshow at MRSM Tun Dr Ismail here, which was also attended by Pontian MP Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.
Ahmad described Hasrunizah and Benut BN candidate Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan as capable local candidates with strong educational backgrounds and proven records.
“We are confident Sumali and Hasrunizah can deliver if entrusted with the responsibility of serving as assemblymen. BN's election machinery is highly motivated, and I hope that momentum continues until July 11,” he said.
