Johor Polls: Arthur Chiong Relies On Strong Track Record To Defend Bukit Batu Seat

By Muhammad Saufee Rosman

KULAI, June 29 (Bernama) -- Incumbent Bukit Batu assemblyman Arthur Chiong Sen Sern is banking on his strong service record over nearly a full term in office as he seeks to defend the seat with a more comfortable majority in the 16th Johor State Election.

The Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate said he remained confident, citing positive feedback from the local community and his consistent work in the constituency since being elected in 2022.

Chiong, 36, said his slim win in the previous state polls had become a driving force for him to work harder in strengthening his position as an elected representative through various local development initiatives.

He said that from his first day in office, he had regularly gone to the ground to address various local issues irrespective of race, religion or political background, including infrastructure problems and flooding in several areas.

“I often visit Felda areas to help the people, as well as provide funding to non-governmental organisations (NGOs), , including RM20,000 for the installation of lights at a futsal court which has benefitted young people. Even now, they are still using the facilities,” he told Bernama here today.

On efforts to address issues affecting residents, Chiong said flood hotspots such as Kampung Rahmat and Kampung Seri Paya are now showing positive changes following his close collaboration with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage.

“Every time there are flash floods in these areas, I’ll make sure to be among the first to head into the village to help,” he said, noting that residents are familiar with his presence on the ground whenever incidents occur.

Meanwhile, Chiong expressed his appreciation to the PH leadership, especially Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the PH chairman, for the trust placed in him to defend the Bukit Batu state seat.

The Bukit Batu state seat, which has 49,963 registered voters, will witness a four-cornered contest in the 16th Johor State Election involving PKR Kulai chief, BN candidate R. Kumaran, M. Premanand (Ikatan Demokratik Malaysia-MUDA), G. Tamili (Bersama) and independent candidate Kamaruzaman Ali.

Chiong won the Bukit Batu seat in the 15th Johor State Election in 2022 with a slim majority of 137 votes after garnering 9,439 votes in a four-cornered contest, defeating Datuk S. Suppayah (BN), Tan Heng Choon (Perikatan Nasional) and Lee Ming Wen (Warisan).

Polling for the Johor state election is set for July 11, with early voting scheduled for July 7.
