Malaysia Voices Concern Over Houthi Threats To Restrict Passage Through Bab El-Mandeb

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has expressed deep concern over the recent announcements and threats made by the Houthis regarding the potential restriction or closure of passage through the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said Malaysia calls upon all parties concerned to uphold the freedom of navigation and maintain the security and safety of commercial sea lanes as stipulated under international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

“At a time of heightened regional tensions in West Asia, Malaysia reiterates its call for all parties to exercise maximum restraint, refrain from provocative actions or threats targeting maritime transit.

“Lasting stability can only be achieved through constructive dialogue, diplomacy, and a strict adherence to the rules-based international order,” the ministry said, adding that it will continue to closely monitor the security situation in the region through its diplomatic missions abroad.

The ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, said the strait is an indispensable artery for international trade connecting Asia and Europe, and any interference with transit through this corridor affects economies worldwide, far beyond the immediate region.

“As a trading nation whose economic vitality and national prosperity rely heavily on open, safe, and unhindered international maritime commerce, Malaysia reiterates that any disruption to vital global shipping chokepoints poses a direct and unacceptable threat to the stability of international supply chains, energy security, and global economic recovery,” it added.

Wisma Putra also advised all Malaysian-registered vessels and shipping operators to maintain high vigilance and adhere to updated maritime security advisories.
