Tesla Leads Early Uptake Of Germany's New EV Subsidies

BERLIN, July 18 (Bernama-dpa) -- Tesla vehicles have so far received the largest number of approvals under Germany's new electric vehicle (EV) subsidy programme, German Press Agency (dpa) reported, citing preliminary government figures.

By June 30, €53.9 million (US$61.7 million) had been paid out from the programme, which is worth up to €3 billion, the Environment Ministry said in response to a question from the Green Party.

The figure covers applications approved since the online portal opened on May 19 and represents only an early snapshot, the ministry said in its written response on July 10.

Tesla led by individual brand with 2,086 approved vehicles, followed by Skoda with 1,197 and Renault with 784.

When manufacturers were grouped by parent company, Volkswagen came first with 2,720 vehicles across its Audi, Cupra/Seat, Porsche, Skoda, and Volkswagen brands.

Stellantis followed with 2,278 vehicles from brands including Citroën, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Leapmotor, Opel, and Peugeot, while Tesla ranked third with 2,086.

The ministry cautioned that the short period covered by the figures and the rapid pace of new model launches meant no firm conclusions could yet be drawn about how the subsidies would be distributed over the full life of the programme.

The scheme introduced by Germany's conservative-led coalition government supports the purchase and leasing of electric cars, certain plug-in hybrids, and EVs fitted with range extenders.

Vehicles must have been newly registered since January 1, 2026.

The size of the subsidy depends on the vehicle, household income and family size and can reach up to €6,000. The programme is intended to support the purchase of up to 800,000 vehicles.
