Lights Out Again: Cuba's Second Blackout In Four Days
HAVANA, July 11 (Bernama-dpa) -- Cuba has suffered another nationwide blackout, the second in just four days, the Energy Ministry said on Friday, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
The ministry said emergency protocols to restore the power supply had been activated.
The socialist Caribbean island is suffering a severe energy crisis due to a dilapidated infrastructure and a months-long oil embargo imposed by the United States (US), it said.
“The collapse occurred in the midst of a critical energy crisis from which the country is already suffering severely,” Granma, the official newspaper of Cuba, wrote on the social media platform X.
Under the protocols, priority is to ensure the supply of facilities such as hospitals, it said.
The state electricity company UNE initially gave no information on the cause of the renewed outage.
The government in Havana blames US sanctions for the continuing power outages.
Most recently, US President Donald Trump in January threatened countries that export oil to Cuba with punitive tariffs.
That led to an almost complete halt in supplies from abroad. The island can cover only part of its oil needs.
Washington is seeking to force an economic and political opening of the island through various pressure measures.
