Coffin Of Iran's Slain Supreme Leader Arrives In Mashhad For Burial
ISTANBUL, July 9 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- The coffin of Iran’s slain supreme leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei arrived Thursday in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad ahead of his burial, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported, citing Iranian media.
ISNA published a video showing Iranian army fighter jets escorting the plane carrying Khamenei’s body and the bodies of members of his family shortly before it landed at Shahid Hasheminejad Airport in Mashhad.
The arrival came as Iran prepared to hold burial ceremonies for Khamenei, following earlier funeral processions attended by mourners.
Khamenei was killed in a joint United States (US)-Israeli attack on Iran on February 28, triggering weeks of war and escalating tensions across the region.
Funeral ceremonies began on July 4 in Tehran, with the final funeral and burial ceremony scheduled for Thursday at the Imam Reza Shrine, one of Iran’s major Shia holy sites.
