Selangau-Mukah Flyover Set For Phased Reopening Once Safety Is Guaranteed - Nanta
SIBU, July 6 (Bernama) -- Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has given an assurance that repair works at Ramp 1 of the Selangau-Mukah Interchange Flyover on the Pan Borneo Highway will adhere to strict safety protocols before the route is reopened to traffic.
According to him, the route was shut down to ensure road safety after the structural integrity of Ramp 1 was compromised when it was hit by a palm oil tanker.
He noted that, based on an on-site technical assessment, the collision had damaged part of the retaining wall structure.
"Controlled structural repairs will be undertaken to secure the stability of the affected site. Unaffected routes will be reopened in stages, while those still deemed a risk will remain closed until the completion of repair works," he said in a statement issued after visiting the scene today.
Acknowledging public apprehension regarding the closure, Nanta stressed that feedback from the community, whether through traditional news outlets or social media, must be given serious consideration, especially concerning user safety on the Pan Borneo Highway.
He emphasised three immediate priorities: maintaining uncompromising safety standards for road users, oversight of the repair schedule to avoid unnecessary delays, and ensuring the public receives clear information on alternative routes, current closures, and the ongoing work.
Nanta acknowledged that the closure is causing significant inconvenience to commuters, particularly residents and regular users of the Bintulu-Mukah-Sibu route, but reiterated that safety must remain the priority before the road can be reopened.
Nanta assured that he would keep a close eye on the reconstruction at the Selangau-Mukah Interchange, promising that the lane will reopen only once safety is fully restored.
