Hamilton Claims Pole For Sprint Race At British Home GP
SILVERSTONE (England), July 4 (Bernama-dpa) -- Lewis Hamilton had a strong start into the British home grand prix weekend when he first dominated practice and then clinched pole position for the sprint race on Friday, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
Ferrari's Hamilton topped sprint qualifying in one minute 28.376 seconds on the Silverstone circuit.
The 41-year-old veteran pipped 19-year-old championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes by 11-thousandths of a second for first place on the grid.
Former champion Max Verstappen was third, .321 back in his Red Bull.
Hamilton's team-mate Charles Leclerc was fourth and George Russell fifth, having likely hoped for a better result after winning the Austrian GP last weekend for his second season win.
Hamilton had earlier topped the only practice session ahead of Antonelli and Leclerc.
Antonelli leads the standings after five wins, 40 points ahead of Russell.
Seven-times world champion Hamilton is the only other race winner this season having prevailed in Barcelona for his maiden Ferrari victory.
The sprint race and qualifying for Sunday's grand prix proper are on Saturday.
