PTSS Empowers Communities Via Transfer Of Eel Farming Knowledge And Technology

ARAU, July 1 (Bernama) -- The involvement of Politeknik Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin (PTSS) here in Projek Penternakan Belut Komersial Geran Sejati MADANI proves that the role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions is not just to produce graduates but also to empower communities through the transfer of knowledge and technology.

PTSS director Khairul Anuar Ishak said the project provides students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real situations through experiential learning while helping the community develop aquaculture enterprises that have the potential to generate income.

As the project coordinator, Khairul Anuar said that PTSS's involvement as a training institution in the project demonstrates that TVET expertise can be directly utilised to enhance community capacity via training, technical guidance and innovation.

"This collaboration also strengthens the relationship between educational institutions, the government, industry, and the community in developing the local economy sustainably," he said to reporters at the project's launch here today.

The launch event was officiated by the director of the Perlis Federal Development Office, Prime Minister's Department's Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU JPM), Azlan Abdul Samat.

Khairul Anuar said PTSS will manage the entire implementation of the project over a six-month period, covering infrastructure preparation, equipment purchase, seeds, training, and financial management before the enterprise is fully handed over to the community for self-management.

He also said the RM500,000 project involves five communities under the ICU JPM, with each community receiving 15,000 eel seeds for farming.

He added that each community is estimated to be able to produce about 5,000 kilogrammes of eels after a growth period of five to six months before being marketed through contract farming methods, thereby creating a new source of income for the local residents.
